Mr. John P. Jones

Principal's Message

Welcome to West Side Middle School, where we pride ourselves on diversity, quality education and a close sense of community and caring.

Our part of the Groton School District services all public middle school students who live with-in Groton City and students in the western part of Groton Town. Included in our "West Side School Community" are the majority of 6-8 graders who belong to military families stationed at "Sub Base New London" in Groton.
This year, our focus will be to transform Westside into a "STEM Magnet School". "STEM" stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. The staff will be investigating the philosophy behind creating this type of program and learn the methods necessary to incorporate STEM strategies into all of our classes. We are very excited about this initiative and look forward to making this "21st Century" initiative a reality for West Side and for Groton.

West Side develops instructional strategies by utilizing scientifically based research and by utilizing any data that can be obtained from a student’s prior school or educational background. Our instructional strategies also utilize technology, “Best Practices” and the staff is constantly encouraged to receive professional development in new techniques and methods to ensure a quality education for all students.

We have an active PTO which all parents are encouraged to participate in. The PTO and Student Council sponsor many activities which involve the community. We have a strong mentoring program through our Guidance Department and have a rich collaboration with the Navy Base and  Town and City of Groton organizations.

West Side has a “School Based Health Center” which can provide students and other family members with physicals and other medical needs.

West Side is a PBIS (Positive Behavioral Intervention Support) school and will be adding the "Restorative Practice" model this year. We look forward to moving forward with the third year of our new Math curriculum and the continuation of a new Language Arts curriculum which include the "Writers Workshop"  from Columbia University and was developed by Lucy Calkins.

Please check out our website and staff websites for additional information.
My Best Regards.
John P. Jones
