Integrated Preschool Special Needs Program
Special needs students:
The integrated Preschool Special Needs Program provides special education and related services to 3, 4, and 5 year old children who are identified by the Planning and Placement Team (PPT) as having a disability. This is a half-day program and students attend three to five days per week based on the PPT recommendation. Transportation is provided for all special needs students.
Peer Role Models:
The program also has a Peer Role Model component. Peer Role Models are children who are 3 and 4 years old, who demonstrate strengths in areas of socialization, communication, cognition, and behavior. Peers participate in a brief screening process to become eligible for the lottery drawing for a slot in the program. Children must be 3 years of age at the time of screening. Peer role models must be toilet trained. Children eligible for entry into kindergarten cannot participate as a Peer Role Model in the Preschool program.
Currently there are 3 sites for the program: Charles Barnum, Mary Morrisson and S.B. Butler Elementary Schools. Each of these sites offer a morning and afternoon class for a total of 11 sessions. The lottery determines which session you are selected for.
For peers participating in the half day program the schedule is 8:55-11:43 Monday through Friday for the morning class and 12:43-3:30 on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday for the afternoon class.
