Spring is Near!!!

Dear Rm 18 Families,

Spring is just days away!!!   The kids are doing a great job with the work demands and preparing for CMTs.  CMTs begin the first week of March.  Please make sure your child(ren) is well rested and attends school during those testing days.  Teachers are looking for good testing behaviors and students will be entered in a daily raffle when they are caught practicing these behaviors.  In addition, Mrs. Miner announced today that every students entered into the raffle has a chance of winning a Kindle after testing is done.  There will be one Kindle winner from grades 3, 4 and 5.  How exciting!!!

Catch-A-Waves are still flying in room 18.  Our first students to reach 100 catch a waves are Joaquin and Aaliya!! Congrats.  We continue to work on being respectful, responsible and ready-to-learn on a daily basis.

We completed the reading unit  "Patterns in the Sky" and have moved on to a social studies based unit entitled, "America's Heartland."  This topic will be the focus of our reading for the next four weeks.  The four weeks of spelling words are already loaded into your child's agenda so they may begin practicing for spelling tests.  Our Theme Question for this unit will be "What makes the Central Region Special?"  At the end of our unit we should be able to answer the questions:
  • How are geography and economy connected in the Midwest?
  • How are geongraphy and economy connected in the South Central States?
  • What is life like in the Midwest?
  • What is life like in the South Central States?

Our writing focus for the next few weeks will be descriptive and narrative writing.  Descriptive writing will focus on getting your child to make their writing more detailed and narrative writing will teach all of the elements of the narrative writing diamond with a clear beginning, middle and end.

In math, we are completing a challenging unit on Fractions.  Our next units will focus on the customary and metric measurement systems and division.  Just a reminder that if your child is still struggling with math facts, they should be practicing every night.

Remember, we do have a short designated snack time every morning.  Please remember to send in a healthy snack with your child as they are all very hungry by the time snack time rolls around.

Lastly, please remember to check your child's agenda and homework every night.  Encourage your child to proofread their work to catch their own mistakes.  We are seeing a rise in careless errors that can easily be fixed if the student took time to read what they have written.  Thanks again for all of the support, especially with work at home.  As always, please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Lockett
